Not a Long Term Toy     On: 2008-11-11

Bought this toy based on the high reviews. I am giving it one star because I cannot figure out how to open and clean it and the instructions are insufficient - my fingers will break before the center cylinder turns enough to open. Seems like a good concept but one would be better off find one with a better, more long term design. I cant continue to leave dog food in this toy with no way to clean it out in a hot environment. It is going in the trash.
We love it!     On: 2008-10-31

The buster cube is great! Our dog is physically and mentally worn out buy the time he gets all the treats out.
I'm giving it a 5, but...     On: 2008-10-26

Im giving this a 5 because I believe in the product, but just a warning: its incredibly loud on hard floors and is more likely to scoot rather than roll on a hard surface making it frustrating for the dog (and for you if you have to listen to it for long). I recommend it for use on rugs or carpet!
Great way to feed/engage dogs     On: 2008-10-01

The Buster Cube works great for slowing down a dogs eating habits. Instead of gorging down a food serving in seconds, the dog has to work at it, so its better for dog digestion as well as stimulating for the dog. There is actually some skill to learn since on different surfaces, the cube behaves differently. For eg, on grass, the dog has to move/roll the cube very slowly and carefully in order not to scatter the food all over the grass and not be able to find it.

Only complaints are: On the setting with the smallest opening, the dog is still able to get the food out fairly quickly. We had no need for any other setting. Also, as mentioned by others, we could not take apart the cube at all (following the instructions). As long as you use dry food though, maybe youll never have to take it apart to clean it...
It's Cubetacular!     On: 2008-09-01

I have 3 Labrador Retrievers that absolutely love this toy.

One of them tries to hoard the toy which leads to a serious round of play! They all bat this toy around and then clean up the rewards in between.

Great fun!
Buster Cube a favorite toy     On: 2008-07-21

I have a three month old Australian Labradoodle. He LOVES this toy. It keeps him occupied and happy while hes in his crate. I was surprised how quickly he caught on to how it works. I bought the large size and was wondering if it would be too big for him, but hes loving it.
Makes the dog work for her food     On: 2008-06-22

A great invention, keeps the dog busy and makes her work for her food. An improvement would be if they made it out of hard rubber instead of plastic so that it wasnt so noisy. My dog took to it right away and didnt need any training at all. She is a 3-month old lab and she figured it out all by herself. She gets exhausted after getting the food out. A tired dog is a happy dog.
Great idea, but not perfect     On: 2008-06-06

After taking a little while to warm up to it, my 8 month old puppy loves this thing. I got it to make him eat slower, and it definitely works. He takes maybe 45 minutes to eat what used to take him a minute, and I still have it on the easiest setting. He figured out how to use it pretty quick, but he will only use it in his crate, which works fine because he can just swat it up against the sides and get food to fall out. I also like that this thing makes the dog use their paws instead of their mouth because most dog toys are for them to bite on, but this is too big for them to bite so they have to use their paws to knock it over.

But like others have said, the design wasnt perfect. It is hard to open at first (it gets easier with time). It claims to be easy to fill, but its actually frustrating to fill up if you plan on using enough to feed your dog. You can only put a handful or two in before having to shake it up to make room for more. Since it is hard plastic, it is very loud. I think rubber wouldve been a better idea for this toy. Either way, my dog is happy with it and loves it, so I am happy too, but I hope they come out with a better one at some point!
Wonderful feeding tool, but difficult to clean     On: 2008-03-27

This is a wonderful toy! I have a 4 month old puppy who keeps himself highly entertained for around 20 minutes with his cube.

I can handle it being noisy, but my only complaint is that its hard to clean the interior. Thats why its 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. The instructions tell you to turn and pull the center piece, but I havent been able to do so and my neighbor who has a mini cube also hasnt been able to pull it out. Ive stopped using it until I can find a way to clean the interior.
Great for a while, eventually broke     On: 2008-03-27

My dog went nuts for this toy, and the first one lasted for several months. Unfortunately, he has strong jaws and was eventually able to crack it along the seam and pull out the middle tube.

After that I went through three replacements in quick succession before deciding to switch to a different toy (the Tricky Treat ball) that is not hard plastic.

Another issue I had was that I found it absolutely impossible to remove the middle tube to clean the toy.
Dog loves it!     On: 2008-03-03

My dog loves this toy. She even takes it to bed with her. It keeps her occupied for about an hour when I put her kibble in it. I would definitely get another if this one ever broke. Its a bit loud, but worth the noise to have a contented dog!
Slow Starter...     On: 2008-01-02

I would love to give a more detailed review, but my dog is still in the "figuring it out" stage with this toy. He seems to want to play with it and get the treats out, however, the hard plastic seems to be throwing him off a bit. He tends to like softer toys, but destroys them fairly quickly. The Buster Cube is so durable, I dont think he will be able to destroy it no matter what he does. I would recommend this toy to others, just be aware that your dog may take a while to really warm up to it.
Great Product!!! cant destroy!!     On: 2007-12-10

My dog Buster (pit mix) loves his buster cube. He figured it out in minutes and was not able to tear it apart like other toys made from rubber. This is great to give to your dog for morning breakfast, rather than just feeding the dog, they work for their food. It keeps our dogs busy when we leave for work and school. We have hard wood floor so it can be loud, but I would rather it be loud than have a bored dog to destroy the house.
One person posted on here that they didnt like it because it doesnt roll, well thats the point, to get the dog to figure out how to get it (food) out, they will use their paws or nose to make it roll (flip over). If it rolled then it would be so easy it wouldnt make them think.
I'd call it an enrichment tool rather than a toy.     On: 2007-11-29

With my past 4 dogs, 2 learned to work the Buster Cube, and 2 were either not smart enough or not food motivated enough to figure it out.

For the two dogs that learned how to work the Buster Cube, food time was and is a challenging delight. The challenge is that not only does the dog have to spin the cube, he or she has to keep it in the middle of the room so that it doesnt get caught up in furniture.

Compared to wild dogs, our pets live relatively boring and unchallenging lives. The fact is, a wolfs brain is 1/3 larger than a same sized dog. The Buster Cube requires a bit of hunting type behavior where the dog has to work for its meal and make constant adjustments and judgments while doing so.

The joy in a dogs face while working the Buster Cube is priceless. If your dog is a smart "chow hound", do it and you a favor and try this.
my dog loves it!!!!     On: 2007-08-13

I got this toy because my golden Cody started chewing up books and other things when home alone and bored. He loves his "food cube" and knows to go get it when I ask for it. It took him about 5 minutes to figure this out, we put it on the easiest setting for that first time, after a week we had to put it on the "Max" setting, because he just emptied it too fast. It definately works better on carpeted floors, is super noisy, and gets stuck under or behind things and t hen he cant figure out how to get it out. I cant leave him alone with it because he seems to like to perform, if I leave the room he gets bored with it and wont play again until I come back to watch him. My only complaint with this is that I havent been able to figure out how to get the thing open to clean it. Its supposed to be easy to do, but all I end up doing is hurting my fingers trying.
Very loud     On: 2007-08-07

This toy is a lot of fun for my dog, and she likes it when I put Goldfish in it. Pieces of dog food kibble arent quite as intriguing to her. The only downside is that our house is tiled and the cube is hard plastic. It is so loud when she gets into it that you literally cant hear the TV over her playing!
A Fun Toy     On: 2007-07-18

Our two puppies really enjoy this toy! Each of them likes to play with his or her cube in their own crates--noisy, but it keeps them busy. Outside the crates, however, the cubes are a little too challenging. Because theyre made of plastic, they slide around a lot on the carpet which makes it difficult for the pups to flip them over. Essentially, the cubes dont flip until they hit something. If they were made of rubber, theyd be a little better. As a crate toy, Id recommend the Buster Cube.
Entertaining toy for smart, bored dogs
by: 1woods3    On: 2007-04-02

We have a Buster cube, a Pawprints giggle treat ball, and several Kongs (and similar toys). Our smart mutt (who seems to be some kind of herding dog) loves this toy. I pull it out whenever he seems bored or depressed. It has never failed to cheer him up. He immediately starts playing with the cube, usually for 15 minutes to about 40 minutes at a time.

Our lab has never figured the Buster Cube out, though. We bought a Pawprints treat ball (easier to use than the Buster Cube) for the lab but he chewed it up to get the treats out instead of hitting it around. (He did learn to hit the Pawprints treat ball around after we taped the hole he chewed in it but he gives up pretty quickly.)

Our mutt likes all kinds of treat toys but he likes the Buster Cube the best bc its the most challenging. Hell play with it for about a while, then come back later (if we put more treats in ;). He likes the other treat cubes, too, but generally gets bored with them faster than he does the Buster Cube.

The cube is very durable. Weve had the same one for several years. Our lab hasnt chewed through the Buster Cube in the 3 years weve had the lab, even though he destroys most dog toys (even the TireBiter toys), sometimes in a minute or two.

Downsides: the toy is noisy on hardwood or tile floors. Also, the dog bangs it into walls, furniture, etc. Its hard to clean and hard to open. I dont bother to open it, i just pour treats in the middle, shake them through the hole, and turn the cube several times.

Overall, an excellent toy for smart dogs who dont mind working for a treat. Your dog will probably either love it or ignore it. If your dog likes challenges, go for it. S/hell probably play with this toy for hours.
Wonderful toy

This is an excellent find. My lab who normally destroys everything has a blast playing with this. Keeps her occupied for quite a long time, and has witheld any destruction-still looks new. I would highly recommend this to anyone, but especially if you have a chewer or a pet that is left alone for any length of time.

Best toy I have found!
by: jenjen1251    On: 2007-02-07

I have a puggle and he loves this toy! we have had other toys like this and with those toys he learned that if he slammed them hard enough all the treats would come out. With this toy it really makes him think and take the time to get the treats out one by one. The only bad thing is that it gets suck in a corner or wedged under the couch and the dog will make holes in the couch if he cant get it out by himself so I dont give it to him when he is home alone but all and all a great product. I recommend it for anyone with a hyperactive dog.
The toy that keeps on giving...
by: Anonymous    On: 2007-02-06

Our dog loooooves this toy, and it keeps her entertained for much longer than any other toy. While she really enjoys it, the piece in the center that is supposed to come out for easy access to fill it, does not come out easily, or without causing a bit of pain to the fingers. It still works, but its a minor annoyance. Its also very loud, if your dog is anything like ours, but she runs it around slamming it into walls and finds it most entertaining to play with it on tiled, rather than carpeted floors. Your dog might be more gentle.

All in all its worth it because she likes it.
Must have carpet for this to work!
by: Anonymous    On: 2007-01-25

I bought this to help my dog come out of his separation anxiety-induced rampages. I got it in the mail, opened it up, put food in it and put it on the floor. We have hardwood floors. It doesnt quite work because it doesnt roll! Not sure if I just am not doing something correctly, but it just cant roll. Any suggestions?

My dog loves the buster cube     On: 2007-01-04

I got the buster cube a few months ago for my pitbull puppy. he loves it! it took him a little while to get the hang of it. I had to push it around to show him how it works but once he got it, he pushed it around everywhere. it is a bit loud and can get stuck in corners but worth it! it will keep the dog busy for a while. i recommend it!
From labs to Yorkies     On: 2006-12-13

We originally got our buster cube for the labrador retrievers that crossed our threshold (my family used to raise guide dogs). Our family dog never caught on to how to use the toy, but we kept it around. We now have a Yorkie thats very insistant on what he wants, and one day, he wanted the buster cube. Now, keep in mind, this was a buster cube meant for a labrador retriever, not for our "teapot" (larger than average) Yorkie. But he loves it! He whimpers for it when he wants it, and weve recently had to remove it from his vicinity and wash it well so he cant smell it, or else hell drive us nuts! But it does occupy his time, and its a great mental exercise for extremely intelligent dogs.
Great idea, wrong material     On: 2006-10-25

The idea for a food cube that makes a dog think and use logic was great. It was recommended by our trainer. I have a treat ball with a similar idea that works great! He rolls it around with his nose and manipulates it with his paws to make the treats (or even regular dog food) come out. I thought the cube would be more challenging. Well it is for both humans and dogs. My dog is smart and picked up the purpose of the cube immediately. The problem: The cube is made of hard plastic. The plastic does not roll easily on hard floors or short carpet (maybe it would work better on plush carpet). Even I have trouble turning the cube with my foot. It just slides. Instead of turning the cube most of the time the dog slides the cube at high speeds across the floor, where it eventually hits a wall and food is spilled out. My dog was as aggitated as myself that it would not "roll" or even "turn" like it should. The idea of harder settings is great, but we have not graduated off the easiest setting. There is still food in the cube and I have even given it a few good spins. It would be much better if the cube was made of material similar to that of a kong or even if there were grippers to make turning easier for both humans and dogs.
The Buster Cube is Great!     On: 2006-08-29

We have a puppy at home with far too much energy!!! One way to occupy him for a while is to put his dinner in the cube and let him knock it around for a while. He loves it and it gives us a few minutes of peace. The only down side is that it can make a good bit of noise as he bats it around. At first he couldnt figure it out but he caught on pretty quickly. I just wish they made a version that was even tougher to get the food out of to keep him occupied longer. Its well made since we have had the cube for about a month and it is only scratched up a bit even though the crazy puppy was originally trying to gnaw it open.
NOT dishwasher safe..but a great toy!     On: 2006-07-24

We are buying our third for our dog. (First one was chewed up as our doggie figured out how to get the center piece out!) This purchase is due to the fact that the second one melted in our dishwasher (the interior). IT IS NOT DISHWASHER SAFE. Otherwise, it is a fantastic toy!
Stimulating and Educational Toy     On: 2006-04-19

Our 25lb. puppy really enjoys this toy! Im sure it will continue to be in his toy box after he if fully grown too. Our trainer recommends them in class as stimulating and time occupying play that doesnt require 100% participation from the humans in the house! Our puppy needed some time to learn how to play with it and some assistance in the beginning but he now has the hang of it and will play with it all by himself. I prefer to use it on carpet as it does tend to slide over linoleum or wood floors, but on carpet its easier for him to flip it over and get the food to fall out.

I will say, our previous dog was a toy breed and 21 lbs. fully grown. He was never as into this toy as our current dog who is a little more capable of manipulating the cube and flipping it with his paws. A nice way to get our puppy some play time and exercise during those times when we cant be his playmates.
outstanding toy     On: 2005-08-29

I totally disagree with the above review. My dog, and other dogs Ive petsat have loved the buster cube. Ive used both sizes and they were both equally effective. Its hard plastic and large size (not even close to 7" in width by the way) makes it really tough for even the most zealous dogs to destroy or even damage. It keeps my current dog busy for up to thirty minutes and she sits excitedly waiting as we load it. It can even be used outside in the yard. This is one of the few toys our dog enjoys and is distracted by.

not for every dog     On: 2005-04-29

I got this for my dog to play with and I have mixed feelings about it. First, the ball is made of hard plastic so when the dog rolls it around and the treats clatter around inside, it is SUPER loud. Second, the plastic is slick and my dog has a really hard time rolling it over because it just slides across the carpet when she pushes it and its difficult for her paws to get a hold on it to turn it over. Its pretty big - about seven inches wide or so. Its very easy to get the treats into it and if you have a super-active dog who would like to play with it outside, this toy would be great.
