Looks great     On: 2008-11-30

This was easy to assemble. This is a sturdy, well made gate. It does not look cheap. I am very pleased with this product.
This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through.     On: 2008-11-03

"This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through." This is not only my opinion, but a quote directly from the instruction manual. My 20# dog pushed it out of his way in a short time. It was mounted on a tile floor.

I tried adjusting the length so the dog could not move it but as long as the dog had access to the sides, he could move it. The only way that I could contain my dog with this gate would be to anchor it to the woodwork.

Amazon and the manufacturer need to make this ("This product cannot completely prevent pets from passing through") known on the product description page BEFORE you order it.
Free standing pet gate     On: 2008-10-30

This is the best pet gate made. It is functional, well made, attractive and priced right. The gate is very sturdy. I am so glad that I ordered it. You will not be disappointed.
Beautiful gate     On: 2008-10-21

This gate was easy to assemble. Im hopeless at putting A into B, but I was able to put it together easily in just a few minutes. It is also very good looking and decorative. The cat and my puppy (imitating the cat) did figure out on occasion how to pull it aside to get through, but I didnt have the 2 sides locked together, because we needed to get through. It helped enormously with housebreaking, by keeping the pup within view. Nicest gate Ive had.
freestanding gate     On: 2008-09-29

excellent indoor gate. It was difficult to find a gate that could accommodate a large doorway. The height works well as my 15 pound mini poodle hasnt been able to get over it and hes a very high jumper. The gate also is of good quality wood which was important since the doorway is in the front foyer leading to the living room.
Looks Good and Easy to Use     On: 2008-09-16

We use this gate to keep our dogs out of the living room and it looks very nice. Moves very easily and was very easy to set up. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent Gate!     On: 2008-07-26

I needed to block a large entrance to my dining room because of a new puppy. This product was easy to set up and looks fantastic. It adds to, not distracts from my decor.
Great for keeping my dog out of the living room     On: 2008-06-18

It is a good height and easy for me to move if I need to. My dog has not tried to get past it.
Freestanding Gate     On: 2008-04-05

Gate works perfectly for our situation. It arrived very quickly after it was ordered. I am very pleased with this gate.
Very Happy     On: 2008-04-04

Finally a product that does the trick. It cant be found in the stores and it took me a while to find a gate for a larger than doorway size. It is sturdy, slightly higher than others,is easy to move, and attractive. Easy to put together. Love it! Great for small to medium dogs. The bars are metal so they cannot be chewed away as with wooden slats. LOVE IT!
great dog gate!     On: 2008-02-13

Richell Freestanding Gate, HL

This gate is perfect for a large doorway or hallway. It is high enough to keep out my dogs and designed to be very stable even in the largest of openings. It looks good and one side can swing to allow for human entry. I would buy it again in heartbeat. I wish I had know about them sooner. Worth the money to protect my carpets.
Nice Product but. . .     On: 2008-02-11

This is a beautiful gate and does what we need to corral the Basset Hounds but for the price - couldnt they have made a latch or quick release of some sort?! We put it up over night and while were at work but in the evening I have to use a screwdriver to let us all in the TV room!
Fifty-Fifty     On: 2008-02-08

We had high hopes for this gate and for the most part it is wonderful. Our dog is 60lbs and does not jump, however he was able to push the end of it and get around it (only when we werent where he could see us). We solved that problem by putting a stool or chair on the end that he would push. Now, even without the stool/chair, he leaves it alone. Okay, so hes not the smartest dog on the block, but we love him!

Also, we still step over it, although you can move it aside easily. Were just so used to stepping over the last fixed gate that we are in the habit. This one is quite tall, though, so you have to have long legs!

My recommendation is that it is perfect for small dogs, but hit or miss for success with the dogs over 30-40lbs.
Easy to build, easy to use, AND nice to look at!     On: 2008-02-08

This gate worked like a charm. Set up took minutes at the most. I used it to divide my apartments kitchen from the living room, an opening approximately 69 inches wide. Best of all, the gate requires no drilling/hammering into walls, ideal for apartment dwellers (i.e., it wont affect your security deposit!). Also, the gate, despite instructions telling you not to do so, was relatively easy to stride over. (Im approximately 58"...if youre shorter, though, you may want to find another way around). All in all, well worth the price.
Great for Baby Proofing!     On: 2008-01-07

Weve been looking for a gate to put in front of our gas fireplace that didnt require drilling another hole into our wall. There is actually only one other gate made for the hearth that weve found but its big, clunky and requires drilling. We found this "pet gate" and found that it works perfectly for our baby proofing needs. Its adjustable and as far as we can tell, the metal part of the gate never gets really hot. Would recommand this for anyone with small kids as it definitely gives you a peace of mind during the winter months when the fireplace is on.
Great for large spaces     On: 2007-11-12

Overall, the gate is a great product. It is easy to assemble, looks great and has been effective at keeping our golden retriever out of "dog free zones". Although the gate is great for large spaces, it doesnt fold or store well/easil when not in use. So, its good the product looks nice, because it is always out. Because we have limited storage and living space, we will likely opt for a gate that can fold and store more easily. If that isnt an issue, then I would highly recommend it.
I love Richell products     On: 2007-11-10

This gate can be shortened or legthened and can be secured into a length. I keep mine non-secured, so I can move the pieces to open and close. I love it and it looks great, while keeping my dogs safe. LOVE Richell products and Amazon.
Excellent Dog Gate     On: 2007-10-15

Used this gate to protect our front window and the woodwork around it. No more scratches and chew marks on the woodwork. The dogs can not jump against the glass of the picture window anymore. Excellent quality and very well made.
Great product.     On: 2007-09-19

This is an amazing pet gate! I have a toy American Eskimo puppy and I use the gate to fence off a non-working fire place so that I can leave him in there when I am not home. It is a great alternative to his small crate. The gate is wellmade and great looking as it actually matches my living room furniture. I have gotten lots of compliments too.
Improvement over the 20" Richell Frestanding Gate     On: 2007-08-16

This is the second Richell Frestanding Gate I have purchased. The first one broke after one too many falls and knock-overs by our teenagers-which I do not consider a product failure. The original 20" gate only truly fenced in one of our four small-breed dogs. (The 20 " gate is no contender against a determined Boston Terrier, I can assure you). However the new HL is 7.5" taller and is a VAST improvement over the original 20" gate. It looks much better than other gates out there and I love that I dont need to fasten this to a wall.

Free-Standing Dog Gate     On: 2007-08-04

I am quite pleased with the dog gate. Its very attractive. It looks much more like a piece of furniture than a typical dog gate. My only disappointment with the product is that it is rather heavy, making it somewhat difficult to move easily, which is something we need to do whenever we open the front door. (Our gate is intended to block our dog from entering the foyer.) I think Ill add felt strips over the rubber pieces on the feet to make it slide more easily.

I am less satisfied with the supplier. Delivery took a month rather than a week, and there was no notification of the delay from the supplier. However, it did eventually arrive, and it was not damaged. I will probably try to avoid this supplier for any other products, if I can, although I will use them if they are the only source of a product I want.
Excellent for baby-proofing, too!     On: 2007-07-17

After looking at many different products, I purchased this gate to prevent our toddler from getting into the fireplace. Its the perfect solution for our needs!

Things I like about it:
* Adjustable size -- allowed us to fit it perfectly around the fireplace
* Stable -- the legs are sturdy and large enough so it wont tip over, even when the baby pulls herself up on it
* Freestanding -- didnt require us to drill holes to secure it to the wall
* Good looking -- the wood frame and black bars blend into our decor (not an eyesore like those white baby-proofing fences)
* Ease-of-use -- installed in minutes, and easily folded to store when not needed
Great Looking Gate! This is the Taller version.     On: 2007-06-17

Pros:
-- Great looking gate compliments our hardwoods much more so than a white plastic gate (ugh).
-- The HL and HS are almost 8" taller than the other Richell gates. The extra height is definitely needed if your dog(s) is larger than a tea-cup breed. The Freestanding design is fairly sturdy although I would be concerned if it could really hold up against very large dogs.
Cons:
-- Definitely expensive. But worth it if looks are important and you forsee using it for a long period of time.
-- The gate folds nice and slim - but the freestanding legs stick out from the unit making it wider than I had hoped. But still easy to carry.
-- Not easy to adjust the width on the fly because there are four screws that secure the two pieces of gate together.
-- I would suggest coating the unit with a coat or two of polyurethane so that your dogs will not scratch the finish on top with their nails if they jump up or "hang" over the top of the gate.
