I bought Greenies for my dog because the vet had told me she has a great amount of tartar for her young age and needs her teeth brushed reguarly. I dont have the time to fool with her every day because she hates me sticking things in her mouth. She loves the Greenies and they seem to be helping her tartar. However, reading the reviews on death caused by Greenies concerns me. She is dog that gulps her food and treats. The Greenies are harder for her than other substances, but I am afraid I may give her one, leave for work, and then have a problem. I am going to watch her and rethink the whole idea. They say that if the dog chews them properly then they arent a problem. Well I cant sit down and have a heart to heart chat with her about how she is eating them. Pets should always be supervised when given treats. On: 2007-07-14
Our dogs love the teenie greenies. They get up every morning and run downstairs to wait by the cupboard where we keep the greenies. Greenies help keep their teeth clean and their breath fresh. We have two chihuahuas, so its hard to find treats small enough for them to chew. The teenie greenies are perfect for them. On: 2007-04-05
My dog loves Greenies. She runs straight to the treat drawer and will snub all the other treats until you get to the Greenie, if that is what she wants at the time. Unfotunately, she goes there too oten, only wanting the Greenies. We have had to cut them in half now so that she doesnt have too many per day! The only way I can get her to eat her dog food now, is to give her a Greenie first! A semi pricey but worthwhile, and good for her, treat. She has been eating Greenies now for at least 4 years, and 3 times a day. On: 2007-03-08
I understand why the manufacturer had to change the fromula, but the new formula is too soft for my little poodle and it only takes him a couple of minutes to finish it (it used to take 5-6 times longer). But he still loves the greenie and hopefuly its helping his teeth.. On: 2007-02-22
my yorkie just go crazy for them, he loves them!!!! On: 2007-02-22
You can get this item at most websites from 19.99 - 21.95, this seller (KV Vets) says save $4.00 and they charge over $28.00, not a fair price On: 2007-01-26
With all due respect to the other reviewer, most products on the market are dangerous to some individuals in some situations. While I feel sorry for the other reviewer, any chew given to a dog could be potentially fatal or cause potential health problems. The flip side is that many dogs and owners safely enjoy this product every day--published news reports covering the controversy conclude this as well. My dog enjoys this product--from the first one, he liked the texture, and properly chewed the entire greenie and came looking for more. After just one, his breath improved dramatically. We have friends at the dog park who also successfully use this product daily. On: 2007-01-08
PLEASE, please do not feed these treats to your dogs/cats. The company has not publicized the risk of blockage and choking, and 13 dogs have died as a result of ingesting Greenies. Try googling "Greenies" and "blockage" or "death." This product is not safe for dogs.
I was sent a free sample of the "reformulated" Greenie in the mail. The package claims the treat is "easier to digest", so I gave the treat to my dog, a 100 pound weimaraner. I watched my dog chew the treat, and he chewed it appropriately, taking his time to chew the pieces into small, digestible chunks.
The next day, my dog refused to eat or drink anything and vomited at least three times. He acted listless and lethargic all day, so that evening we called our vet. We told the vet that the last thing our dog ate was a Greenie. The vet informed us that Greenies are known to cause intestinal blockage in some cases. He suggested that we take him to the emergency vet clinic for advanced treatment.
We took him to the emergency clinic for x-rays and diagnosis. The vet treated him with an anti-vomiting medication and told us to return if he continued to vomit. The cost of this visit was approximately $400.
The next day, we woke up to find our dog covered in bloody soft stool. He has had three bouts of diarreha in two hours, all of it soft and bloody. We called our vet and he told us that the dog was experiencing severe intestinal distress, which was causing the bloody stool. He suggested we give him water and return to the clinic in the early a.m.
Thankfully, our dog passed the Greenie through his body. Had he not passed the Greenie, he would have required exploratory surgery, which my vet estimates will cost approximately $3,000, depending on the nature of the blockage.
The representation that the new, reformulated Greenie is "easier to digest" is patently false. Our dog properly chewed the Greenie, but yet the treat was still insoluble and indigestible. His ingestion of the Greenie caused serious health issues. These things arent safe -- please dont support this company or put your dogs health at risk.
