I adopted a 90 lbs but very sweet monstrosity of a dog. He loves to walk and apparently doesnt care that I cant keep up with him. He would constantly pull on the leash and either drag me off balance, choke himself or both. I got this with the hope of keeping him from choking on this collar, but instead got a lovely surprise that he doesnt like to lunge away from me anymore. At first I put the thing on backwards intentionally, not understanding why the leash attached where it did (at the front, chest area), but once I put the thing on the right way, he would lunge and not be able to get his front legs out stretched in front of him, so couldnt complete the lurching motion. He fell over a few times, but figured out quickly that this was not something he could do any longer. He still pulls (did I mention 90 lbs?), but he does it more cautiously and therefore gives me warning so I can brace to keep him where he should be. We are still learning, but as I am new at this, the harness was really a life saver. I am back to get one for the 50 lbs puppy that was found on the side of the road several months ago with hopes that he doesnt grow out of it.

I am not sure how it does or does not work for shorter dogs, however. Mine both have some German Shepard in them and are anything but close to the ground.

No more pink snouts :)     On: 2007-11-02

We have two medium sized dogs: about 55-60 lbs and the medium-sized harness works beautifully for them.

I am sorry that the other reviewers had a bad experience. You really should consider giving it a second chance friends. Maybe try it in a pet-store, where an experienced personnel can help/show you the correct way to put it on and handle it.

We first got a "Halti" (over the snout harness) for my younger un and she would constantly try to pull it off. Walking on hard surfaces meant she had a bloody snout in just a couple of days. Painful as it was, she insisted on rubbing her nose into the ground to pull this off. My older one is a tad bit more calm and she doesnt mind the Halti Head Collar #3 Medium (50-90-lbs) - Halti at all.

So I use and love both these Gentle Leader products. Armed with these - I can actually go on a walk in heels, with two cute 60lb monkeys who want to chase every squirrel on the block, but cant :)

I prefer this to the Halti for the simple reason that there is no sinus pressure, nothing of a painful nature for your pooch, just the fact that their direction turns the moment they pull. That way, they learn quickly that if they pull they will not be able to go ahead at all!
Not for dogs low to the ground.     On: 2007-08-30

I had to return 2 of these harnesses (and got dinged a 20% restocking fee from this seller - on top of the cost of shipping both ways). This harness does not work with all dogs. Both my dogs fit the "girth measurement" but the loop where the leash attaches drags on the ground. My two dogs were able to walk out of the thing and kept getting their front legs tangled up. Also there is one dimension where the harness cant be adjusted so you might find, as I did, that the girth measurement is correct, but it still is too big for your dog. The description should have warned the owners of "short" dogs that this would not be a good choice.

If you want to try this out on your dog, buy it from a dealer who will refund ALL the purchase price without a 20% restocking fee. Its too risky otherwise.

Its OK. The chest strap falls down easily and I have to keep adjusting it on walks, maybe I have it fitted wrong but I followed the instructions and if its this hard to fit..... If your dog is not a good walker getting this is not a cure all trick, you will still need to train the dog, Ive enrolled in a dog class, and after just one class we were both walking better together. Also, my dog is smart and just figured out that if she pulls sideways she can still pull.

My vote, save your money and just go to a dog training class.
