![]() Pet Supply Imports - Chrome Plated Training Collar w/ Quick Release Snap Large, 3.25mm By: PSI Average Rating: 3.5 Total Reviews: 14 More Information wonderful training aid, less harm than choke or gentle leader Id guess that the negative reviews are from people who have never used a prong collar and have never trained a dog. For example, the gentle leader can actually snap the neck/rupture vertebra since it gives so much leverage. IMO its very dangerous to use on dogs with long necks such as sight hounds or for use by large trainers and medium to small dogs. IMO this aid is best used on big dogs with short necks (mastiff, bull mastiff, etc) coupled with small trainers. The prong or pinch collar is a limited slip collar meaning that it can only close so far and no further. The standard choke collar on the other hand is a steel garrote. The prong collar, properly used, allows the trainer to get the dogs attention using a gentle two fingered tug or snapping motion. The prong collar can be misused, but so can the gentle leader, choke collar or martingale. However its actually more difficult to misuse the prong than many other training aids. Additionally its important to match the aid with the dog and the lesson. I use several different aids and leads, depending on what Im doing. The prong is best used for corrections during distraction training (i.e. jumping, lunging, etc around other dogs) while a flat buckle or rolled leather collar is appropriate for teaching the heel after distraction training is complete. Once distraction training is complete or for softer dogs a limited slip nylon collar is often most useful. There is not, IMO, any one training aid that is best for all dogs under all conditions. However the prong collar can be a life saver, literally, as Ive been involved with several dogs who were on the verge of being put down due to uncontrollable behavior and were turned around with the use of the prong. An excellent book about dogs who are endangered by people who have no knowledge or experience of dogs but simply look for an excuse to be vitriolic, abusive and often racist: Bandit: The True Story of One Dogs Rescue from Death Row Vicki Hearne ISBN-10: 1602390703 what the #@)$_@*)$#_@$# PEOPLE ARE YOU SICK????? If you have a "problem" with your dog most likely YOU are the problem, why punish the dog ? get some books and educated yourself in how to resover the issue COME ON THIS IS CRUEL ! Incredible results I have a 60 pound German Shorthaired puppy who has been a nightmare to run or walk with. I had delayed purchasing any such training collar because I wanted to implement other training methods. In general, he is a very responsive dog and learns quickly. Even when I had a dislocated shoulder, I would try to walk him normally, fearing that he would re-injure me. A friend of mine recommended this collar and acknowledged that it looked horrible but was effective. So, I decided to give it a try. This collar is a godsend! It does not have sharp edges and has not caused him any physical harm. He is an angel when we go on walks and runs. I plan to only use it for a week or so then return to his regular collar. You'd have to be sick You would have to be as sick and disturbed as Mike Vick to use this torture device. If I ever see anyone using this I will report them immediately to animal control authorities. The thought that someone could look at this device and not be disgusted by the idea of putting this on an animal makes me sick. Which Size How big is a large? I cant figure out by looking at the picture how this collar goes on, does it slip over the head? Humane and Effective Obviously, whether its this specific brand or other pronged training collars, the reviews are polarized. Yes, if your pet is doing something that you dont want it to, it is probably your fault, and the best solution is to take a rolled up newspaper and bop yourself on the head with it. However, I feel confident in my training skills. I currently own two large puppies who were potty trained, sitting, coming, laying down, distinguishing persons and places, paw shaking, rolling over, and eagerly going to bed by the time they were 12 weeks old without ever having to use loud or physical negative reinforcement. The one staple of obedience they could not learn up into their 6th month was simply walking beside me. This wasnt an option because by 6 months, they were both weighing 60 pounds and were going to injure me before long. I exhausted all of the most humane training tools I could before attempting this product. I felt relatively assured it wouldnt cause injury to my puppies since my family used to use a pinch collar on our pit bull when I was younger, and it was never injured over the course of 9 years of use. However, my dogs have a kinder disposition as Auzzie-Bernese Mtn Dog mixes. This is their story: Like I said, I tried everything. I started with their regular collars. They didnt work. I tried full harnesses. They didnt work. I tried harnesses that were clipped at the front of the chest. They didnt work. I tried choke chains. They pulled so hard that I was quickly convinced they were going to collapse their esophagus cartilage before they would walk beside me (especially when squirrels were in sight). I tried training them indoors and outdoors. I tried training them together and separated. I tried the gentle leaders (a muzzle collar, which leads the dog by the head, much like a horse). It was very effective in correcting bad behavior, but it didnt teach habitually good behavior. As soon as I clipped into the normal collars or harnesses, all the bad habits returned before I left my house. On top of that, the dogs hated the muzzles so much, despite my guided fitting and how-to-train-with-muzzle sessions with a trainer, that they became anxious instead of excited when I reached for the leashes. The point Im trying to make is that I exhausted over dozens of dollars, dozens of walks and training sessions, and was seeing no end in sight. So I decided to give the pinch collars a try. It only took one walk to not only correct the tugging (which was the extent of efficacy the other training tools offered) but also teach habitual good behavior. I feel confident that within a week, I will not even need these collars and will be able to replace them with a choke chain or just clipping to their normal collars to achieve the same results. The collar is used to simulate what a pack leader or mother would do if a submissive dog or puppy was misbehaving or drifting away from the pack/litter, which is bite them on the neck and remind them whos the alpha or carry them back where they belong. They are reminder bites. You should never be pulling hard enough to cause damage and make your dog cower or whimper. Also, it should not be the only form of training. Keep treats handy and reward good behavior, dont resort to simply punishing bad behavior and hope for good results. If you are afraid of the pain threshold, put the collar on yourself (your arm or leg, for starters) and try it out. The choice is always yours to make, and it should never be made blindly. Ask trainers and read training literature. If you have exhausted all options, give these a shot. However, I would argue that unless your training program and/or training instructor strongly recommend their use from the beginning, this should not be your starting tool. Find what works best for you. As is the case with anything, your results may vary and this might not be the best option. My results have been healthy for my pups, my arms and back, and have been successful overall. ANIMAL CRUELTY! The only reason I voted 1 star is because there was no option for 0! This is disgusting, why would anyone use this on their pet?? How about training your dog in a more humane way? Gentle lead collars, dog training..anything is better than hurting your pet! I cant believe items like this still sell or that Amazon would approve such a thing! Of course your dog is going to stop pulling on his leash, he doesnt want to be tortured!! Torrture This sort of thing should be illegal. It is nothing but a way to torture an animal to make it obey, it makes me sick and that Amazon sells this collar and several like it make me think less about the company. I would urge pepole not to use such a instrument of pain on their dog. Your dog love you, do you want to repay it with torture? The whole point of this collar is to give the dog pain so it will do what you say. It is for pepole that can not be bothered to train their dog to respect them rather than fear them. Not Used Have not used this because the instructions are very lame. If I had it to do over I would have ordered one that comes with rubber tips that are inserted over the metal ends. Like Night And Day It took a few days to get used to putting this collar on, but now even my 9 year old does it effortlessly. After my 60 lb. Black Lab/German Sheppard mix kept dragging my poor kids across the yard, not to mention the fact that she pulled my wife down, severing her ACL and causing her to have to go through the painful ACL replacement surgery (shes still in physical therapy but back to about 95% now), I knew that we had to do something to stop the constant pulling. I spoke with a friend of mine that has Rotties and she recommended this collar... Its perfect. The kids now have total control when theyre walking the dog and my wife no longer fears a repeat of the debacle that occurred this past fall. This is a humane, painless way to contol your uncontrollable pooch. If pulling is a problem for you, the answer is just a click away! A good part of a training program This is a very effective and humane training tool. Much nicer than a choke collar. (which may actually damage the dogs trachea) Large dogs can sometimes cause this collar to come apart if they lunge hard enough. I have personally experienced this with my male rottweiler (and have owned/trained this breed for 8 years). Not a good feeling when you are walking near a road. Which prompted me to place a small nylon collar low on the dogs neck and attatch it to a seperate lead as a back up in case the unthinkable should repeat itself. This collar is a very good tool. It should be used under the guidance of a trainer and should never be used on an unsupervised dog. The dog should not see the collar as giving the correction or he will begin to shy when you place it on him. A good trainer will instruct on proper introduction of this collar and the proper intensity of correction. This may be used "live" (connected to a single "O" ring) or "dead" (connected to the both "O" rings. Your dogs individual temperment and training level will dictate this. Most trainers do not condone the usage of a prong on any dog younger than 6-8 months old, though some do make exceptions. Power Steering for Dogs I highly recommend this type of collar for a dog who has some type of issue walking on a leash. Especially a medium to large strong dog. The dog is less apt to lunge, change direction abruptly, fuss when you stop, or dart out into the street. It is very well made, and provides a sense of control and security for the dog owner. Uninformed people may think it looks evil, however, it is not harmful for your dog. Fit the collar correctly,(measure high on the neck with little slack) and you will agree; this collar provides power steering for dogs. And a more enjoyable walk for you! This type of collar is not to be kept on the dog 24/7: only for walking or training your dog. Herm Springer Pinch Collar 22in Really like this collar I bought a prong collar from the pet store. Then I researched them online and read that the Herm Sprenger collars were better quality and had rounded edges that were better for the dog. This brand was highly recommended by animal experts. I returned my store bought collar and bought this one. First of all, I definitely like the snap-on feature. It makes it so much easier to put on. I use this with my 2 70-lb labs. I clip the leash to BOTH rings so that it does not tighten, but still works as they do still feel it if they start to pull. This works for my dogs and is the recommended way to start using this type of collar. If needed, you can then clip it to only the one ring so it tightens. From day one, they have stopped most of their pulling. I also have treats that I put in my left had and give them while were walking every so often, so that helps. They now walk by my side for the most part. I used to HATE taking them on walks. Ive taken them every day this week and it is actually enjoyable now. Super Easy "Training" Collar Until I found this collar for my 45 pound Wheaten, I had great difficulty controlling him when he encountered "friends" during our walks. This is the one and only one collar that works! Highly recommend it.
