I was finished cleaning my Drinkwell fountain and didnt realize I had the last filter. I didnt bother putting the filter back in. Why would Frank, my cat, know the difference. Frank refused to drink from the fountain. He has been using it religiously for ten years. At 2:00 a.m. in the morning, he was sucking on the tub faucet, which is something he hasnt done in years. So, yeah, the filters do make a difference in taste and I immediately ordered some more online. (I dug the older, 6 week old filter out of the wastebasket and Frank went back to the fountain.)I had to respond to the person who said it doesnt make a difference. It sure did to my Frank. I bought the fountain when he just wouldnt drink water out of a bowl and his kidneys were abnormal at age two. Hes twelve now and his kidneys are dandy. I love the Drinkwell, filter and all. I want my Frank around a long time. Without the drinkwell, his kidneys wouldnt have lasted long. That just shows you how important water is to your kidneys, people and pets alike. Drink up! 3 filters to a pack, easy to open (minimal) package (low waste), fit fine, work fine - everything as expected. They recommend replacing every month, but every other month works fine. :) On: 2008-04-26
My cat refused to drink water from a bowl. He would lick the faucet and sometimes the bathtub, or drink from the toilet, all of which were gross and annoying.
With the fountain the water is no longer stale (or whatever) and he no longer scratches at the bathroom door (though sneaks in whenever possible).
Even thought the water is filtered coming out of the faucet, I figure that it cant hurt to have additional filtration. On: 2008-04-20
I completely agree with Mike Gunns review. Why should animals need filtered water when they will also drink from puddles outside. However, after my initial filter became dirty and I threw it away, my cat would no longer drink from the fountain so I had to buy more filters. Once you spoil them, its too late to stop now. This charcoal filter is an excellent accompaniment to the Drinkwell Fountain. It purifies the water from the reservoir and helps to ensure smooth operation by removing hair and other particles from the fountain. A worthwhile supplement for those using the Drinkwell Fountain. On: 2007-12-31
I have used Drinkwell Pet Fountains for years. Theyre great. However, I never use the filters. Think about it, your dog or cat will lick their rear end and drink from a puddle outside. Do they really need water that has been filtered through activated carbon? I dont think so. This is a classic case of we humans thinking our pets are something more than they are.

For a number of years, I used 3rd party replacement filters (and pumps) because they were superior to those supplied by Veterinary Ventures,
However, their quality has taken an incremental leap since Dr Burns contracted Northstar Investors to handle the business and product improvements and I now purchase the improved OEM supplies.. On: 2007-11-26
Works well and have had no problems. Only complaint is the pump motor, which is louder than I expected. Puts out an audible humm, which can be heard through the floor in the room below, even though the fountain is on a thick carpet. On: 2007-04-01
filters arrived before projected arrival in good shape and product was exactly what I ordered.
