Petmate pet ramp works great!     On: 2008-03-23

Weve had this pet ramp for several years and use it almost every day. Our Lab is getting older and was having trouble jumping into the back of the Explorer. We looked at a number of ramps and chose this one for folding design and durability.

You DO have to train a dog to use it. We just got a 12 month old Doberman rescue and trained him to use it in a couple of days. Heres what I did: first, lay it flat and reward with treats for walking on it (10-15 times). Then, put in some kind of LOW step and reward for going up it. Next I put it on the Explorer bumper and SLOWLY had the dobe take a few steps on it and rewarded him (remember, he already associates it with treats). You just keep extending it depending on the dog. The first time the dobe climbed up all the way, he got a jackpot of treats! Lots of fun! The key is you always have CONTROL of the dog when they are on the ramp. I stand on the left side of the dog, holding their collar or a short leash length. Otherwise they can fall off halfway and then its tougher to get them back on (voice of experience with another dog).

Hope this was helpful - this ramp really does work great and certainly helps with an older or smaller dog.

Durable and easy to use!     On: 2008-01-12

We purchased this product to assist our dogs in and out of our Jeep Cherokee.

Yes, a dog who has never used a ramp will have to be trained to use a ramp. That has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the ramp itself, thats a pretty simple and basic fact of life. Dogs arent used to walking on something slim that rises -- why do you think dogs have to be TRAINED to run agility?

Anyway, the product is durable, easy to use, easy to store, and we whip it out quickly to load up, again to unload at the dog park, again to load up to go home, and again once home. It is doing wonders on saving our dogs joints! Not to mention our backs.

My 90 pound dog had knee surgery so I needed a way for him to get into my SUV since obviously I couldnt carry him. I was taking him to therapy and to vets. He was so scared of the ramp. I even tried it with my other lab who isnt scared of anything and he wouldnt use it either.

Its only good point is that it is fairly easy to transport. But Im definitely going to return it.
