I also have the extra reservoir in case I go away for the weekend. It is almost silent if you turn the flow down to the lowest setting. If you turn it up then it sound like a water fountain. By now however, the mineral hard scale has built up in the bowl area and it looks dirty even after I sanitize it. Any ideas on how to clean it up without using chemicals? People accuse me of feeding my kitty dirty water! cat's like it, but it's tough to fill What can I say, were on our second fountain and the cats have always loved them. The flow control is an important feature for keeping the noise down, the bigger reservoir is a plus. The seal on the reservoir cap on the newer one is a big minus. Many times Im unable to open it. I take care not to close it too tightly but when the water runs out it can take more force than I can muster to open it. Ive tried petroleum jelly on the rubber seal and it helped a few times but now its just as tough to open as it was before. This one is not for the arthritic out there. Excellent design for cleaning My cat also enjoys the Drinkwell fountain. I wont reiterate the benefits that the other reviewers have already stated -- but Im also impressed that the Drinkwell (i.e., the main, white unit) is fully washable. All the plastic pieces can be separated from the motor, and then thoroughly scrubbed (it will help to have a narrow bottle-cleaning sponge to scrub some of the smaller areas). Furthermore - thoroughly cleaning the Drinkwell every two or three weeks keeps the machine - and I suspect, the cat - healthy. Slimey-ness can develop even in the Drinkwell if you dont wash it occasionally. After a couple tries its relatively easy to disassemble and reassemble, and I believe thats a testament to its impressively sensible engineering! Even though the filters are somewhat pricey, trhe Drinkwell is highly recommended. Plenty of clean, filtered water Before we bought the Drinkwell fountain, we had a water dish with a large reservoir, which wed gotten from Petsmart for a few dollars. I wasnt sure if it was worth the non-trivial money to buy one of these gizmos instead, but Im glad we made the investment. The less expensive water dish could get stale. Even though itd hold enough for a week of water for two cats, the plastic bowl from which they drank got a little slimy. Changing the water was a bit of a pain, too, as it required wrestling with a pop-off plastic bottle. In contrast, the Drinkwells filter keeps the water really clean, and the reservoir lifts off conveniently, with no mess. Of course, this only matters if the cats like it. One of them immediately took to the Drinkwell; in fact, he puts his face right into the water stream and sucks it down. ("Dainty" is not a word youd use for this cat.) The smaller cat was slower to adopt it, and still prefers to drink from the side where water isnt flowing right next to her face, but she has no problem with it. One oddly nice side effect: the Drinkwells fountain makes a pleasant sound. This isnt quite like getting a zen garden fountain for the living room, but it does add a peaceful element to the kitchen. BEST thing I could have gotten for my two cats ! Ive been using the Drinkwell Pet Fountain for about 13 months now and I have to say that it is the best source of clean water that my cats have. They LOVE drinking from the fountain and it encourages them to drink more.....which they do. My male cat who has had bouts with FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrone) drinks at least 4 times as much water as he used to and he hasnt had a reoccurance with the FUS for over a year. The only problem I seem to be having is in obtaining an extra motor for the fountain. Its seems that the only way to get a motor is by purchasing the whole fountain again. Hmmmmm.....I would recommend this purchase to anyone with cats or dogs. Its fabulous! |
