Great for allergies, but, be warned...     On: 2007-01-31

Caution: this foods first ingredient is potato. A good rule of thumb when choosing a high quality dry food for your dog is to make sure that the foods first ingredient is a protein or protein meal. My lab also suffered from severe skin allergies, she did well on this variety and her allergies cleared up right away, but it also made her gain weight like crazy! She gained about 10 lbs one year on this food, which is roughly about 20% of her body weight. Nothing like it has ever happened to her before on any other food, I was quite shocked. Once I started asking around, I heard similar things from other people who have put their dogs on this dry food, their dogs all gained weight.

Not to say that I dont love Natural Balance products, I think theyre fantasic and very high quality for a reasonable price, Im just not very enthusiastic about this particular variety because its high carb and relatively low in protein. I do suggest the Venison and Brown Rice variety from Natural Balance, it has the first ingredient listed as venison meal and like the duck and potato variety, is also hypoallergenic. The Venison and Brown Rice, as well as the Original Super Premium formula both have equally high quality ingredients, and also have higher protein counts than the duck and potato variety. I would highly suggest either of those two. Also, keep in mind that there are TONS of high quality hypoallergenic dog foods out there in the market, brands like Innova, Blue Buffalo, and Natures Recipe are all fantastic, easy to find and cost the same as Natural Balance, so its best to look around, read the ingredients, and find a dry food that best suits your dogs dietary needs.
Phenomenal Food!     On: 2007-01-30

At the time we rescued our Lab, I didnt know anything about food allergies. Once we figured out that he was allergic to just about all foods, our local pet store suggested Natural Balance Duck and Potato. What a difference it made in just a couple of days! Gone were the hives, hot-spots, the constant scratching and head-shaking. He was like a different dog. His coat and his personality really began to shine! Our new rescue Lab is slowly being converted to this "Wonderfood"---Thank you Dick Van P, for developing a much-needed premium food for our four-legged family!

This dog food was a lifesaver! My 1 1/2 year old bullmastiff developed severe food allergies. He had ear infections, hives and hot spots & would lick his paws until they were raw & infected. We tried all brands of dog food & nothing worked. I found this food on the internet & decided to try it. Within 3 days the hives were gone! Within a few weeks he was totally healed. No more licking & no more ear infections. If you have a dog with food allergies, its worth a shot!

natural balance potato and duck dog food     On: 2006-12-14

I have a dog who is allergic to almost all foods except for this one. It was hard to find in my area. When I compared the price of the food here and the gas to go and get it, it was about the same price to get it online. Very fast shipping. Very happy and will purchase dog food from amazon again.
A MUST for pets with food allergies     On: 2006-05-15

We have a golden retreiver that suffered from constant ear infections for over 2 years. She was on constant antibiotics and ointments. As soon as the medication stopped, her infection would return within weeks. My vet had suggested an allergy formula, but she wouldnt eat it. Out of frustration, I decided to take matters into my own hands and try this dog food. Within 1 week, the redness in her ears cleared up. It has been over 9 months, and she has not had a single ear infection. I think this food is outstanding, and would recommend it highly!
Pricey but worth it!!!!!!     On: 2005-06-02

My 10 month old german shepherd female was always a fussy eater. A friend recommended this food and she immediately loved it. After 6 months she still devours it.
A word of caution go by the recommended amounts listed on the back of the bag. Too much will cause diarrhea. Also recommended is Natural Balance canned food.

My doa is a Ger. Shep. 8 month old. She is a picky eater. I give her the natural balance as I beleive it is a well balanced, very low in fillers food. I also add either a can of turducken or a can of chicken soup for the soul dog food along with her added fish oil, wheat germ oil and cannalo oil. She also gets garlic added. My dog was first raised as a raw eater. Good diet, but didnt like to give her the chicken as she would want to hide it in the house.
I do think van patten has come up with a good dry food for dogs. But, I cant find it where I live. Need to know where I can order it onlline and have it deleivered to my home.
